Most people can describe, in reasonable detail, the result of an election held eleven thousand kilometres away. Most people cannot name the person who represents the ward they sleep in.
That is not a personal failing. It is what happens when information about the world is free, infinite and beautifully packaged, and information about your own street does not exist anywhere at all.
The two halves have never lived in the same place. Global news is an industry — wires, budgets, correspondents, aggregators, push notifications, a hundred products competing to hand it to you faster. Local news is a WhatsApp group. Sometimes a Facebook page run by one exhausted person. Sometimes a stringer filing to a district edition that does not exist online. Sometimes nothing.
So we all carry two information systems that do not speak: one polished and irrelevant to your Tuesday, one relevant and almost impossible to find.
Four tiers, not one "city" dropdown

A slider moves you between them, so you can pull the feed as tight as your own locality or widen it to the whole state. Location permission simply picks the nearest tier for you — decline it and the slider still works; you choose your state, city and localities by hand.
Two things that make it actually local
1. Genuinely local sources
The feed pulls from local publications, not from national wires with a city name in the dateline. That is a different, less glamorous ingestion problem, and it is the one that decides whether a local feed is real.
2. Anyone can file — and it is reviewed before it publishes
Readers, verified citizen reporters and approved local journalists can publish original local reports with photos. Every submission is reviewed and approved by the editorial team before any other user can see it. Nothing publishes automatically. There is no user-to-user messaging and no commenting.
This matters more than it sounds. The neighbour who was actually at the ward meeting knows what happened; he has simply never had anywhere to put it. The person who knows is almost never the person with a byline.
Why this is about reporters, not just readers
Consider what happens to someone who does the hardest, least glamorous work in journalism: sits in a municipal meeting for four hours, files an RTI, waits eleven weeks, finds the discrepancy, writes it up with the boring qualifications that honest reporting requires. They post it. It gets eleven likes. Meanwhile a screenshot with a confident caption and no verification gets two hundred thousand views by lunchtime.
The platforms are not evil about this; they are indifferent, and indifference at scale is worse. An engagement algorithm genuinely cannot tell eleven weeks of work from an unsourced screenshot, because the only thing it measures is whether you stopped scrolling. Rigour has no signal. Caution reads as boring.
On NEWX, reporters and local journalists publish under their own name, reviewed before going live, attached to a body of work rather than to a post that dies in ninety minutes. The stated next commitment from the team is that journalists must be able to earn on the platform — the people who file the story sharing in what the story earns. Six languages, because local news is not in English
NEWX supports English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi, across both the interface and the article content, with translation applied per section. A hyperlocal product that only worked in English would be a contradiction in terms.

Honest status: coverage is deepest in Maharashtra, with other Indian states expanding. Smaller cities outside the strongest regions will feel thin right now. If your city is not covered, you can request it from inside the app, and coverage opens when enough readers in an area ask for it.
Outside India, the app works identically — Global News is full — but the Local tab is currently unpopulated. That is a coverage gap, not a restriction: there is no region gating and no feature switched off by country.
